About

Youth Parliament is a unique experience that gives young people aged sixteen to twenty-five an insight into the system of law making in South Australia.

Application

Any young person residing in South Australia within the age range 16-25 can apply to participate in the Youth Parliament Program. You may apply as an Individual or as a member of a team by filling up an Application Form. Individual applicants will be allocated to a team by the Taskforce

Training

Youth Parliament participants work in teams of 6 to 8 to actively research and develop a Youth bill. Participants will complete 2-3 days of training before attending the Residential program. The training will cover Bill writing, Parliamentary process and etiquette, debating, public speaking and working with the media.

Camp

The program culminates in a residential camp during which Bills at Parliament House are debated and amended.  In addition to the debating in Parliament House there will be other recreational activites, games and lots of fun, including a full-on Wreck day.

Feedback

Youth Bills are presented to the Minister for Youth for distribution & comment by relevant Government departments. Comments are returned to participants.

You are passionate about youth issues – you will have the opportunity to advise South Australian Politicians & decision-makers on matters affecting young people.

Youth Parliament is a great opportunity for you to develop your public speaking & debating skills – after participating in Youth Parliament you will be more confident when speaking in front of groups.

You want to learn more about government & politics – you will be able to meet with & talk to decision-makers & learn first-hand how Government & the Parliament operate.

You want to meet other young people & form new friendships & networks – the program includes a great Camp & you can really get to know people & form friendships that could last for years.

Program Cost

The YMCA believes strongly in providing a program that is accessible. The program fee is heavily subsidised and includes all training, accommodation, food, etc.
